Who fixes what
Three groups deal with gas problems. The gas network looks after the street and the meter. Your LPG supplier looks after the bottles. A licensed gasfitter looks after the pipes and appliances inside your property. That last part is what this site is for.
Gas help in the Mountains
How a gas leak is found and fixed
1. Pressure test
A gasfitter usually starts by checking whether your pipework holds pressure. A drop means a leak.
2. Find the leak
The gasfitter traces the pipes, joints and appliance connections to the source.
3. Fix and test
Faulty parts are repaired or replaced, then the system is tested again.
4. Paperwork
Regulated work comes with a compliance certificate. Ask for your copy.
Mains gas and LPG
Some Mountains streets have mains gas. Other homes, especially in the upper Mountains and on the bush edge, use LPG bottles. Your gas bill shows which you have.
Cold climate, old homes
The upper Mountains are colder than the lower Mountains, so gas heaters work hard for months. Older cottages can have pipes that are decades old. Worn pipes and blocked flues can cause leaks and carbon monoxide problems. A pre-winter gas heater service helps.
